Zalman Communications is led by Jonathan Zalman, a reporter turned communications strategist who, after more than a decade in journalism, apparently still wanted to see his name on things.

The less glib answer is that Jonathan built a career on curiosity: reporting on terrorism, technology, hot dogs, and the world chess champion; editing a daily news blog; teaching in China and New York; fundraising for children; building marketing at AI startups; and leading PR, content, and communications at cybersecurity companies.

That range still shapes Zalman Communications. There have never been more ways to reach people—or more ways to waste time trying. We like to understand what the organization needs—and what it needs from us—before deciding what to make, say, or do. Sometimes that means getting the foundations right. Sometimes it means doing one thing exceptionally well.

Experience gives us a point of view, not a rulebook. We know what tends to work, but we're always willing to test, change course, and be surprised.

Based in Portland, Zalman Communications works with technology companies, growing businesses, and good causes. We're generalists who like specialists, and we get close to people with deep expertise because they're usually where the interesting stuff is.
